A serious crash has caused a major Wiltshire road to shut.

The incident occurred on the A4, between Calne and Chippenham, on the evening of Tuesday, February 7.

The AA are reporting very slow traffic along the road in both directions in the area between Studley and Derry Hill.

This stretches from the junction with Norley Lane to beyond the Stephen Cox Garden Trust on Studley Lane.

Google Maps estimates that the affected area is even larger, reporting heavy or non-moving traffic from the junction with the A342 to the Black Dog Cupcake Company, just past Old Road.

The police have been contacted for comment.

Update: The police have confirmed the road will be closed between the A3102 and the A342 for the forseeable future after the crash.

A spokesperson said: "Please be advised that the A4 near Studley is currently closed between the A3102 junction near Calne and the A342 for Old Derry Hill following a serious road traffic collision.

"The road is likely to be closed for the foreseeable future.

"Drivers are urged to avoid the area."
