The public footbridge over Chippenham railway station closed this week as work began on a new £1 million scheme.
The footbridge is a public right of way but will be inaccessible to pedestrians until the spring after the project to improve the facilities at the station began on Monday, January 9.
Non-rail users will be required to use an alternative route during this period. The alternative walking route is via Union Road, New Road and Station Hill.
The station only footbridge from the north side car park will remain open during construction for passengers, along with the station lifts and stairs from the main entrance.
The footbridge is being closed in order to increase the safety of the public right of way.
Alina Wolfe Murray, Network Rail’s sponsor for the project, feels this outweighs the inconvenience of temporarily closing the bridge.
She said: “Turning the stairs to the north of the station will also allow for safer pedestrian access and an improved walking route for people using the public right of way over the railway line.
“We’d like to thank local residents and passengers for their patience while this work is completed, and we’ll look to minimise any inconvenience where we can.”
