There is a suspected outbreak of bird flu on the Crammer with two unexplained deaths confirmed this week.
Concerns were sparked when a swan was found dead on the Crammer on Tuesday, December 13. Fears this was caused by bird flu increased when a Canada goose was discovered to have died on Thursday, December 15.
Other swans and birds have also been reported as looking unwell.
Devizes Town Council are now warning people to not feed wild birds and to exercise caution around wildlife in the area.
Town Clerk Simon Fisher said: “We’re just being really cautious because we are concerned that there may be bird flu. We’re trying to contain it and stop the spread.
“People just need to be careful. The Crammer is normally a beautiful area full of wildlife but we’ve noticed that birds are dying in worrying circumstances.”
Taking to Facebook, Cllr Iain Wallis added: “Please do avoid close contact with the birds on the Crammer and please do not feed them at this time.
“If you have any contact with other birds please make sure to wash your hands before dealing with them if you have been at the Crammer.”
DEFRA, the RSPCA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency have been notified and are monitoring the situation.
Dead birds can be reported on 03459335577.
