Chippenham Town fans enjoyed their FA Cup day out at Burton, despite a disappointing 6-1 defeat.
Even after the game the travelling fans were in good spirits thanks to a historic run to the second round of the cup for the first time in their history.
Francis Phillips, who has worked on the turnstiles at the Thornbury Surfacing Stadium for 25 years, was proud of what the players have accomplished.
She said: “We knew the chances were slim because one giant killing is brilliant but two is a big ask.
“We’ve had a fantastic day and we scored a goal, that’s all that matters.
“To get to the second round for the first time in our history it has been fantastic… they’ve done brilliantly and we’re really proud of all of them.”
Bluebirds supporters were full of anticipation ahead of the game, with many confident of pulling off another shock.
Tom Edwards, who made the three and a half hour trip to Burton on a coach, said: “I’m very confident.
“It’s the FA Cup and there are always some really good surprises, so I’d say 1-0 to Chippenham”.
Kath Thatcher and her husband Robert were more optimistic, predicting a 3-0 victory.
Chris Wilson was more cautious and hoped to take the tie to a replay.
He said: “If we can hold on for the first half hour I think we might get a draw out of the game.
“I’d be happy with a draw, I know a lot of people want to win, but get a draw and take them back to Chippenham… then draw Manchester United or Arsenal at home in the next round.”
Unfortunately for Chippenham fans, their hopes of causing another cup shock were all but dashed by half-time.
Burton dominated the ball from the outset, and finally made Chippenham pay after 26 minutes.
Former Swindon winger Jonny Smith left his man sprawling with a dummy before calmy placing his right footed shot beyond Will Henry.
Burton pressed on from there and tried to kill the game off. It looked like Chippenham would go into the break just a goal behind, thanks to some last ditch defending and one unbelievable save from Henry, but Deji Oshilaja broke Bluebirds hearts on the stroke of half-time.
He broke free on the byline before cooly taking it round Henry and slotting home.
Burton added to their lead again after 55 minutes through Bobby Kamwa who converted a golden chance from close range.
The highlight of the day for Chippenham fans came on the hour mark, when Harry Parsons’ ruthless finish sparked hopes of an improbable comeback.
Parsons was played through on goal by Luke Russes’ delightful disguised ball and made no mistake to give the travelling supporters something to cheer about.
Any hopes of a miracle were dashed by a pair of Sam Winnall goals in the space of just six minutes.
Albion’s number nine was on hand to grab two predatory goals, both from inside the six yard box after good crosses into the box.
Oshilaja capped the day for the League One team, slamming the ball into the back of Henry’s net from the edge of the box to extend the lead to five in stoppage time.
Despite the heavy defeat, the 700 supporters who made their way to Burton stayed throughout to cheer the team on.
After the game, Mr Edwards was disappointed with the result but happy with the cup run this season.
He said: “It was a pretty tough game… it’s a disappointing result but it was Burton all the way really.
“Getting this far will give them a cash boost, hopefully they’ll look back and do it again next season”.
