Detectives have released CCTV footage as they trace two people they hope may have witnessed a robbery that left a man dead.

Martin Brown, 54, died as a result of serious injuries suffered around the time he was robbed on Meadowcroft in Stratton at around 11pm on January 27.

Mr Brown, who lived in Queensfield, had his wallet and its contents stolen, and was found on nearby Beechcroft Road the next morning at roughly 6am.

He was rushed to hospital before he “very quickly” deteriorated. He died on February 7.

Paul Tony Warren has pleaded guilty to robbery at an earlier court hearing but a decision on whether to change a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, to either murder or manslaughter, has not yet been taken.

Now detectives have released two CCTV clips of people who may have witnessed the incident.

The first clip shows a man walking along Meadowcroft shortly before the incident took place – the man police would like to identify is on the right of the footage.

The second clip shows a man riding a bicycle past the incident, before turning left into Beechcroft.

Detective Constable Dave Topp from the Major Crime Investigation Team said: “Although short clips, we believe the individuals captured on the CCTV footage may have either witnessed the incident or may have information which could be significant to our investigation.

“If you recognise the people pictured please get in touch. If you believe one of these people to be you but you do not think you have anything further to report to police please do still get in touch so we can eliminate you from our gathering of witness statements.”

At a hearing in May, prosecutor Rob Welling said that there was “only one person in the country who can do the necessary forensic work in relation to Martin Brown” which would allow officers and the Crown Prosecution Service to make a chagrining decision.

“Everything has gone to that person in time, but if there is only one person who can do that kind of work, there will be inevitable delays,” he said.

The case is next due back before Swindon Crown Court on November 4.
