TWO of the seven MPs for Swindon and Wiltshire have resigned from Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Government amid an ongoing upheaval at No 10.

After two days which saw senior cabinet members including Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, resigning, county MPs have been making their stance known on the future of the PM.

The major beneficiary has been Chippenham MP Michelle Donelan who has been elevated to the cabinet as Education Secretary, replacing Nadim Zahawi who has become the new Chancellor.

Ms Donelan has not publicly commented on her elevation from Universities Minister, but she did retweet No.10’s announcement of her new position.

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has also remained in his job as deputy Chairman of the Conservative party after backing the leader.

But two other MPs have resigned and two backbenchers have made it clear they does not support the PM.

Andrew Murrison, who sits for South West Wiltshire MP stepped down from his post as trade envoy to Morocco on Tuesday. His resignation letter said to the Prime Minister: “Others must square, as best they can, their continuing enjoyment of your patronage with their personal sense of decency, honour and integrity but I no longer can”.

“Your position has become unrecoverable. I strongly urge you to resign.

John Glen, MP For Salisbury, has also stepped down, this time from his post as economic secretary to the Treasury, the second most important job in the department after Chancellor.

His letters expressed “a complete lack of confidence” in the PM’s leadership, saying he could no longer commit to the role.

He added that the “country deserves better”, following the handling of the appointment of the former Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher, and lamented the PM’s “poor judgement”.

North Wiltshire’s James Gray, who is a backbench MP  has also not held back in criticising Mr Johnson.

“I think he is finished. What happens next, of course, we’ll have to see.”

The South Swindon MP Robert Buckland who was in the Prime Ministers cabinet until September said of the PM: “He no longer has my support.”

Danny Kruger, the MP for Devizes  and Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has declined to comment on the matter.

At least 31 ministers and aides have now quit the government, including Michael Gove, the chief whip and transport secretary Grant Shapps.
