MARLBOROUGH Town Councillors are expected to make a final decision on Monday (July 11) on where to plant 70 trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project.

The councillors will discuss the options and potential sites at their Amenities & Open Spaces committee meeting, which had previously agreed to the planting of 70 trees to mark 70 years of The Queen’s reign.

The council plans to hold upcoming meetings with Action for the River Kennet (ARK) and with Aster Group to agree plans for planting trees on land not owned by the town council.

The Town Clerk Richard Spencer-Williams has agreed to pass on the map of Wiltshire Council land provided by Councillor Caroline Thomas.

Cllr Donald Heath, the committee vice-chairman and Cllr Jo Waltham, the committee chair, shared maps highlighting areas for tree planting that had been identified so far.

The sites planned include a copse of 40 small trees at Tin Pit, supplied by the Woodland Trust, and the replacement of a line of trees at Elcot Lane between the allotments and the village green.

ARK has identified 15 trees suitable for wetlands, including willow, for Stonebridge Reserve.

A ceremonial oak tree was planted at Priory Gardens on Thursday, June 2 for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
