Stonehenge has been voted one of the top three worst tourist attractions in the world for value for money.
The other two are Buckingham Palace and the Empire State Building in New York.
A survey of visitors’ reactions by the Park Sleep Fly travel company has revealed that whilst druids may hail Stonehenge as a special site, some tourists are so unimpressed that one Trip Advisor reviewer dismissed it as “just a bunch of rocks”.
Another, who complained about the £19.50 ticket to experience the ancient monument, moaned, “it is a rip-off, typical British management, unfriendly sociopathic people greedy for money and adverse to culture.”
Although it is believed that it took around 1,500 years to construct Stonehenge, the UK icon which is currently the subject of a new exhibition at the British Museum doesn’t inspire awe in everyone.
Another dissatisfied culture buff commented: “If you want to see a bunch of old stones piled on top of one another, go to your local cemetery” and a fellow tourist whinged: “It really isn't as impressive as you would think or imagine, the stones are a lot smaller than expected.”
Park Sleep Fly commented: “Stonehenge is a famous UK landmark, although it appears that a number of its visitors aren’t too impressed, with eight per cent of reviews being negative.”
Stonehenge tied in second place in the poll of places that world travellers find lousy, with a 1.9 out of 10 value rating, the same as given to that other national treasure, Buckingham Palace.
Although the home of royalty scored fewer bad reviews, with 3.3 per cent complaining about what they saw for the £30 tour price.
One visitor wrote on Trip Advisor: “Waste of money, most of the garden roped off, extra to see the rose garden. I would not recommend this experience, more time is spent in the queue getting through security!”
And another, after touring the palace last August, complained: “This should be a zero rating. Most of the garden is cordoned off and I would say the garden is shabby at best.
"They suggest you spend two or three hours there. You won't be there that long because it's boring, unless you picnic on the lawn. The Queen is definitely not a gardener.”
But according to the 4.2 per cent of visitors who resented the £32.57 price of experiencing a trip there, the Empire State Building is the number one worst-value tourist attraction in the world.
Although the 102-storey Art Deco skyscraper has appeared in more than 250 movies, was climbed by King Kong and was a romantic inspiration in An Affair To Remember and Sleepless In Seattle, 1,601 people gave it a one-star review on Trip Advisor, with one of them claiming, “the view is terrible”.
