NEARLY 900 fines have been handed out to those who broke Covid rules in Wiltshire since the start of the pandemic.

According to figures published by the National Police Chiefs' Council 776 fixed penalty notices (FNPs) were handed out by Wiltshire Police between March 27 2020 and December 19 last year.

However, the force says that its figures are slightly different to that of the NPCC.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said that 890 FNPs for breaches of Covid regulations were handed out during the time period.

“In total we have issued 890 fixed penalty notices for breaches of government restrictions,” they told the Local Democracy Reporter.

“During that time we have been careful to ensure FPNs were issued fairly and proportionately, with a scrutiny panel in place to review them.

“In total we rescinded 43 FPNs – this is included in the 890 so a total of 847 were upheld.”

As well as this, six of these were recorded after May 17, 2021.

But how many of these fines were actually paid? The police said that once the FNP is issued it is passed on to the ACRO Criminal Records Office, which is responsible for the payment of fines.

ACRO said that it is unable to comment on individual force statistics.

ACRO is responsible for the issuing and processing of the fines and then handles the payments on behalf of forces in England and Wales.
