Travellers who were ordered to vacate a Chippenham field missed their 10am deadline this morning (August 6).

The group, at Hungerdown Lane, had been urged by both the town council and Wiltshire Police to move from the site.

Police confirmed yesterday that they had served notice under Section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.

There were nine police cars and 12 officers at the field.

On the opposite side of the field, there were seven caravans and 13 additional vehicles.The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

Police dogs were also believed to be on the scene and armed police have arrived.

At around 11am, the Travellers left the scene and Chippenham Town Council were tasked with clearing the field of debris.

A vehicle was removed from the scene with the assistance of police.

A police spokesman said: "We can confirm that a traveller incursion at Hungerdown Lane, Chippenham, has now been moved on following work by Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Council.

""We used powers under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to direct people and vehicles to leave the area.

"This was enforced this morning (August 6), with all persons leaving the site. We assisted with the moving of a vehicle, a BMW, which had broken down."

Cllr Laura Mayes, Deputy Leader of Wiltshire Council said, “Our enforcement officers have worked closely with Wiltshire Police who issued a Section 61 notice yesterday requiring the travellers to leave the site by today (6 August).

"They have now complied with the notice and left the site.”
