Chippenham Town Council has resolved to declare an ecological emergency.
At the latest meeting of full council, a motion was raised by councillors Myla Watts, Nick Murry and Declan Baseley asking that the town council consider agreeing to a declaration of a climate emergency.
This would include a list of actions and commitments in principle such as creating new green spaces for Chippenham, enhancing biodiversity, and ceasing to use insecticides and harmful herbicides.

However, following a debate an amendment was proposed by Cllr Desna Allen and was eventually voted through.
A town council spokesman said it would: “enable officers to investigate the operational and financial implications involved and return to full council in September 2021 with a report for further discussion.”
It was argued that this was already built into the original motion which states that officers would be asked to report on any financial implications on the budget.
The amendment, however, was passed and Chippenham Town Council has declared an ecological emergency.
