The shortlist for the annual Richard Jefferies Society and the White Horse Bookshop Literary Prize for the best nature-writing book has been revealed.
Richard Jefferies, who was born in Coate, was famed for his works depicting rural life with a profound awareness and feeling for the natural world.
Judges will give the prize to the author they feel best embodies the spirit and knowledge of Jeffries’ writing.
The Marlborough bookshop has been co-sponsoring the nature-writing prize for the last five years.
The shortlist includes:
- Orchard: A Year in England's Eden by Benedict Macdonald and Nicholas Gates
- Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty
- The Consolation of Nature: Spring in the Time of Coronavirus by Michael McCarthy, Jeremy Mynott and Peter Marren
- The Swallow: A Biography by Stephen Moss
- Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake
- The Gospel of the Eels: A Father, a Son and the World's Most Enigmatic Fish by Patric Svensson.
