A Trowbridge ghost hunter has survived a night in a dark and dreary underground lock-up to raise money for charity.
The Devizes lock-up dates back to 1650 and has been home to a blind house, police cell and WW2 shelter.
Support worker Mandy Bird and her sister Sarah stayed the night on Halloween (October 31) to help raise money for Alzheimer’s Support.
During the sisters' stay they were, to begin with, only disturbed by pub-goers as they wandered the streets above after bars closed at 10pm. But as the night grew longer, ghostly presences began to reveal themselves.
Mrs Bird explained they came across a male spirit who disliked their lights, as well as a female spirit called Ella. The sisters also experienced a "smell of burning embers."
Mrs Bird has raised more than £340 thanks to her freaky fundraiser.
She said: "It was incredibly atmospheric and we did actually manage to get some sleep!
"Seeing first hand as a support worker what effect Covid-19 has had on my clients with isolation, I wanted to raise awareness of the charity and the amazing support we offer in Wiltshire."
She added: "I've always had an interest in haunted buildings and the history that goes with them, and after talking to our fundraiser Major of Devizes, Chris Gay, I thought why not take on the challenge."
