TWO men who tried to trick a 92-year-old man out of hundreds of pounds yesterday have been arrested by police.

The men knocked at the home of the victim in the Winterbourne Dauntsey area shortly after 10am and told him that his gutters needed cleaning.

They then demanded £500 from him.

Fortunately, the victim contacted his daughter who called police.

Officers from Amesbury and Salisbury attended the location and were supported by the dog unit and firearms officers as the men had run away.

Thanks to information from local people, who still adhered to the current social distancing regulations, the two men were located and arrested under the Fraud Act.

Sgt Russell Griffin, from the Amesbury response team, said: "I would like to extend my thanks to our local community who were able to assist us in locating and arresting these two suspects.

"This was a callous crime which took place during a very anxious time for us all.

"I hope this also illustrates that despite us assisting with the national effort to slow the spread of Coronavirus and ensure people are complying with the Government guidance, we are still out there in our communities responding to and tackling all types of crime."
