Unity, hope, truth, love, peace and life are the positive messages on an impressive ceramic memorial plaque made by a group of young people at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy. The plaque, now installed in the school grounds, was officially inaugurated last week by eight of the students who were involved in designing and creating this attractive artwork. They are pictured with art teacher and project co-orginator Mrs Karen Goddard and Youth Arts representative Sue Gray, from Kennet and Swindon Arts Society.
The plaque, completed in the art department before the summer holiday, is now a permanent feature of the grounds, in an area dedicated to the memory of former students and staff. Many hours of work were involved in creating this lovely mosaic, in which some Sixth Form students also assisted. The young artists hope that the plaque will offer inspiration and encouragement to people of all ages.
St Bartholomew's Church Choir, members of Royal Wootton Bassett Choral Society and singers from other churches shared in an evening performance of Requiem, by Gabriel Faure. The concert, in the parish church, was welcomed by the Rev Canon Jane Curtis, and included prayers for peace. The choir was conducted by Fiona Fleet, and the organist was Richard Sutcliffe. Soloists were Haydn Williams and Katie Terrett.
An eco-fest environmental evening on Wednesday, from 5.30-8.30pm at the Memorial Hall, will feature sustainable products and Christmas gifts. The event offers an opportunity to discuss rewilding, reducing carbon emissions, sustainable businesses, local community groups and activities. The programme will also focus on wildlife; and there will be craft demonstrations and a children's art competition. Entrance is free, and refreshments will be available.
Bassett House residents, members of their families, staff and visitors from the local community, including Rotary representatives, shared in special Remembrance ceremonies, at the care home, with the Rev Oliver Blease, Royal British Legion members and the branch standard.
Resident Kenneth Martyn, 91, a former Flight Engineer, and activities co-ordinator Carla Mayhew arranged for residents to take part.
