Plans for a new community centre in Calne look set to fall at the last hurdle after vital comments on parking were not heard by councillors who agreed the project.
The community centre, due to be part funded by developer Persimmon Homes, was set to be built in North End after the original site near Beversbrook Medical Centre was to be developed into 14 new houses.
North Wilts District Council originally agreed to the plans on August 29 but due to a council blunder councillors have to hear the application all over again -this time with advice from Wiltshire County Highways.
As the planning officer was on holiday in August the comments from Highways never reached district councillors.
The report stated the proposed development will fall short of eleven spaces and should not get the go ahead.
Councillors did agree to proposals in August despite receiving seven letters of objections from residents raising concerns such as parking, over development and the status of Calne Local Centre as the hub of the community.
At a Calne Town Council meeting on Tuesday it was revealed Persimmon may walk away from the plans if the district council rejects proposals.
This means plans for a new community centre in Calne would be scrapped.
But deputy town mayor Mercy Baggs is calling for Persimmon to honour their promise and build a new community centre even if plans are rejected.
She said: "I will not be blackmailed. I don't think Persimmon will appeal the decision if the proposal is rejected.
"They have made a lot of money from Calne and now they have a moral obligation to build this community centre.
"It is needed in this area of town. I know there are other community centres but this one would offer people something different."
But former councillor Peter Dolman, who resigned as deputy mayor over the issue of developing the local centre site, said there was no need for another community centre in Calne.
He said: "There is an abundance of halls in the north of Calne for hire. There is the North Star Club, Bremhill View Social Club and soon there will be space at Beversbrook Sports Pitch Project for groups to meet.
"A community hall in this area would just be another hall competing for business."
The proposal is due to be heard by North Wilts District Council onWednesday night.
