Plans by Lafarge Cement to trial alternative fuels at its Westbury works are to be closely examined by local organisations to ensure there are no potential environmental or health issues.

Officers from the Environment Agency, the Health Protection Agency, Wiltshire Primary Care Trust, Wiltshire County Council, Kennet District Council and West Wiltshire District Council are overseeing the preparatory work undertaken by Lafarge before it submits a formal application to the Environment Agency later this year.

The pre-application work includes actively seeking views from local people on the company's proposals to trial alternative fuels with a biomass, carbon neutral component.

Maggie Rae, director of public health in Wiltshire, chairs the group of organisations looking at Lafarge's proposals.

She said: "The statutory bodies in Wiltshire are working closely together to ensure that the process Lafarge follows as it approached submission of the formal application is rigorously monitored and absolutely robust.

"We encourage local people to get involved and find out more, making use of the engagement process which Lafarge is carrying out."
