Kennet District Council has given permission for an extension at Rushall Primary School despite fears it will increase traffic.

Councillors at last week's regulatory committee meeting heard that the proposed two-storey classroom and nursery extension, replacing a prefab, is needed because of the school's growing popularity.

But residents are concerned the new extension will encourage the school to take on even more children from outside the village, causing traffic congestion and pollution.

One resident said: "It is not very environmentally friendly to have children bussed in or driven by parents from neighbouring villages.

"There is no safe transport plan for under-fives. People park all over now. Expanding the school any further is dangerous."

Councillors heard that pupils come from Wilsford, Charlton St Peter and Upavon as well as Rushall.

Coun Laura Mayes said: "I am surprised that county highways made no objection to this application. I have seen near accidents at the entrance to the school.

"I would have thought a travel plan was fairly fundamental. There should be a condition that the school must produce a travel plan."
