Frustrated homeowners are urging residents to have their say on big developments in Chippenham before it's too late.
Jim Belk and Bruce Perrett, who both live in Esmead, wrote to North Wiltshire District Council in a bid to understand the decision to allow a block of flats in Cocklebury Road to be built almost one metre too high.
Councillors asked planning officers to submit a report into planning enforcement.
Coun Chris Caswill, chairman of the overview and scrutiny committee, said there were important lessons to be learnt from the way the Cocklebury Road controversy was handled.
The committee was told that there had been confusion over the developer's plans, where one had showed specific dimensions and heights whereas a later plan had not.
Coun Ronald MacGregor said: "How can a plan with different dimensions to what has been approved, get through the system?"
Coun Caswill said: "Is there not a lesson to be learnt that maybe we should have a procedure that if a large developer submits plan A, we say plan A is the one which has been approved and this is the one you should proceed on?"
Mr Belk and Mr Perrett said they were disappointed claiming the council had not addressed many issues, such as why the building could not have been lowered.
Mr Belk added: "The important thing is to warn others to keep an eye on the planning process."
