Graham Beale, Nationwide's chief executive paid tribute to Debbie Fry, who worked at the firm.
He said: "We are all devastated by this news and our thoughts are with Debbie and Bob's children and their family at this very sad time.
"Friends and colleagues at Nationwide are also trying to come to terms with this sad news.
"Debbie was a much loved and valued colleague, who will be missed by all who knew her and worked with her.
"Debbie had worked at Nationwide's head office in Swindon for many years, most recently as a secretary in the retail area of the business.
"In these circumstances the society will offer its support to family and colleagues."
Three years ago Debbie Fry and daughter Rosie took part in the town's carnival and the Brownie Pack, dressed as characters from TV show The Flintstones.
Carmen Morris of the 4th Wootton Bassett Brownies said: "We're all devastated to hear of the news. Wootton Bassett is a very close-knit community so we are all feeling this."
