DRIVERS are being arned of delays on the M4 next month when two mammoth power station parts are painstakingly transported along the busy road.

The 470 tonne transformer units will be towed slowly along the motorway overn-ight on the weekends of November 12 and 19 on their way to Didcot power station in Oxford-shire.

Wiltshire police have warned drivers that the 297ft long transformers will block almost two lanes of the eastbound carriageway and cause huge delays for motorists traying to get along the M4.

A spokesman for Wiltshire police said: "Because of the size of the transformer units they will require two vehicles, one to pull and one to push it.

"On Monday November 12 and 19 they will be leaving the A46 junction at 10pm and be travelling extremely slowly along the M4 to the Membury services over-night.

"On Tuesday November 13 and 20 they will leave Membury and move on to Didcot power station.

"We are warning drivers that there are likely to be huge delays on the M4."

The power station pieces measure 18 feet across and are 17 feet high so will straddle two lanes of the road, but should leave enough room for motorists to pass.

The spokesman said the power station parts are so big the two lorries carrying each piece weigh more than 48 tonnes themselves and are more than three metres wide.
