Firefighters dealt with a kitchen fire that left a Pinkney cottage suffering from smoke damage on Sunday night.
Crews from Malmesbury, Cirencester and Tetbury were called to the incident, near Sherston, at about 5.40pm.
They extinguished the blaze in the single-storey annexe at Hunt Cottage, on the Pinkney Court estate.
The occupier, who is believed to be a man in his 30s, was awoken by his smoke detector.
He was suffering from smoke inhalation when the fire service arrived and was taken to hospital by ambulance, in order to recover.
Watch manager at Malmesbury Fire Station Wayne Jones said they had brought the incident under control very swiftly.
"It was a fire that appeared to have started in the kitchen area of the property and the cause is still currently under investigation," he said.
"There was one occupier in the property at the time of the fire, who left the house and was suffering from smoke inhalation.
"He was raised by a smoke detector, which allowed him to get out before the fire could spread to other parts of the property.
"We very quickly extinguished the fire, within ten minutes.
"We gave medical assistance to the casualty until the ambulance service arrived, then we went through the process of ensuring the property was safe.
"The property was suffering from extensive smoke damage and was cleared using ventilation fans, as well as natural ventilation."
The cottage suffered from a large amount of smoke damage inside, but, thankfully, there was little external damage.
Mr Jones said the incident was another example of how important it is to have fire alarms in good working order.
A spokesman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said there was nothing suspicious about the fire and it is thought to have been of accidental origin.
