Barry Corr is prepared to settle for being Town's supersub for the next couple of weeks after ending a six-month injury nightmare with a fairytale last-gasp winner on Saturday.

The amiable Irishman came off the bench for his first appearance of the season with 15 minutes remaining and instantly eased any nagging worries about his troublesome back by condemning Tranmere to only their second league defeat of the season.

With three goals in eight loan appearances last season, Corr has a lot to live up to this campaign but, despite a delayed start, he is determined to start repaying the faith shown in him by manager and supporters alike.

In his absence August newboys Simon Cox and Billy Paynter have won over the hearts of the County Ground faithful, with 10 goals in 13 appearances between them, leaving Corr relishing the new battle ahead.

He said: "It was good. It was great to get on and score the winning goal against such a good side.

"The lads put in a fantastic performance and while it was nice to score the goal it was more the lads' performance that got us the victory.

"I have to say I played 20 minutes and for 10 of them I was just trying to catch my breath. I tried to come into the game at a good pace but I probably won't be fit enough to start a game for the next two weeks.

"What I have to do is make an impact when I come off the substitute bench because Coxy and Billy have done so well and obviously I have to get myself back into the manager's thoughts and back into the team. I have no right for an automatic start, I know that."

Corr was not the only player making an unexpected return with Sturrock forced to take several other gambles on his walking wounded squad.

Andy Nicholas made his first start of the season, in place of the injured Jamie Vincent at left back, while skipper Hasney Aljofree completed a miraculous recovery from a knee injury, returning after just a month on the sidelines after a month out.

Man-of-the-match Lee Peacock was also carrying an injury going into the County Ground clash, as was Craig Easton and Jerel Ifil, but a resolute Town side dug in and eventually ground their high-flying visitors down.

Corr's scrambled finish after a lung-busting run was probably just about reward for an industrious display but for the striker it was about a lot more.

"It has been really difficult," he said. "I know people say it all the time but you really can't explain how difficult it is when you are injured and just watching the boys play.

"Especially in the dressing room before the game when they are all up for it and you are sitting there and you are down. It is such a great feeling to come out in front of the fans, who are brilliant to me so I really appreciate their support and hopefully I can keep repaying them with goals.

"That is the first time I have come on and not felt pain for a long time. I still have a lot of rehab work to do with the physio. It is by no means clear because we still have a scan to do in a month's time but hopefully that will be all clear."

Being somewhat of a lost sheep during the last couple of seasons, Corr knows he has it all to improve at the County Ground, having failed to hit a senior goal before arriving in Wiltshire.

He said: "I was at Wednesday when they were struggling and maybe a few people doubted me but I always knew I could score goals, I always had faith in myself.

"The manager obviously saw what I can do because he brought me here and I just want to repay his faith in me by keeping scoring."
