Three car crashes in the space of a few hours caused traffic chaos around Chippenham tonight.

The first happened at just after 4.30pm near junction 17 on the A350, when a woman driver had to be air lifted to hospital after her car overturned.

Then just two hours later, a two-car collision on the M4 between Chippenham and Swindon caused major tailbacks as traffic built up behind the accident.

Police and fire crews arrived at the scene just after 6.45pm and the cars were moved to the hard shoulder to free up the queues of traffic.

Finally, at 7.15pm a two car collision occurred on the A350 northbound at Chippenham causing the road to be closed by police from Days Lane at Kington Langley to the junction 17 roundabout.

All of the emergency services are still at the scene and it is not yet known if anyone has been injured.

Driver Laura Hickman said: "It was absolute chaos. There were sirens all over the place and the M4 was like a car park with nothing moving."

Police are warning drivers to be especially vigilant because of the dark conditions and heavy over night rain.
