THE EXTENT of the damage caused by a gas explosion in Chippenham was revealed this morning as investigators continued to examine the area.
Fire services were called at 6.36pm last night to reports of an explosion at a flat above the BetFred store in Market Place, which was evacuated and closed off.
Diners at the Indian restaurant Royal Ashoka were reportedly evacuated mid meal as more than 40 firefighters, dozens of ambulance personnel and police from across the county took control of the nearby explosion scene.
During the incident police flew drones above the building to examine the scene and make sure it was safe before sending in fire fighters.
This morning police remained at the scene and the alley section of The Shambles, where most debris had fallen, was cordoned off.
One man was taken to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, with severe burns and has since been transferred to a specialist burns hospital in Swansea.
Duty Superintendent Phil Staynings said: “We are currently at the very early stages of the investigation. We are working with the fire and rescue service and Wiltshire Council to secure the property, which has sustained significant structural damage.
“We would like to thank local businesses who have provided refreshments, shelter and accommodation during the evening as well as volunteers from the British Red Cross who are supporting anyone affected.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101.
