Barbara Burgin
A large congregation at the United Reformed Church in Royal Wootton Bassett celebrated the life of Barbara Joan Burgin, 85, who contributed much to the life of the church and the local community.
Tributes, many of which were read by the Rev Sarah Simpson, recalled Barbara's kindness, generosity and compassion. Even in times of illness and sorrow her firm faith was reflected in her courageous spirit and warm smile. She is remembered as a leader of worship, in her church, in the Women's World Day of Prayer, and at the Larks Bible study group. She represented the URC on the local Bible Society action committee for more than 20 years, and made jam and cakes for coffee mornings, where she was a helper whenever her health permitted.
Mrs Burgin's early life was spent in London, where she and her late husband Charles were active in the Baptist Church before moving to Wiltshire. They were married for over 62 years and were a devoted couple. Mr Burgin died 15 months ago.
Barbara gave outstanding service to the Guide Association, was a Brownie Guide leader in Wootton Bassett for many years and subsequently was a local member of the Trefoil Guild. She worked for some years in the examinations department of Swindon College. She and Charles were closely involved with the Baptist Caravan Fellowship, through which they travelled widely and made many friends.
Barbara was a keen supporter of the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth. She and Charles were fond of all animals, and provided a home for a succession of rescue cats and dogs. Donations in Barbara's memory will benefit The Blue Cross animal charity.
Further happy memories were shared at an excellent buffet lunch in the Wood Street URC hall after the service. Cremation took place later at Kingsdown, Swindon.
Memorial donations for the Blue Cross may be sent c/o Johnson & Daltrey, 112 High Street, Royal Wootton Bassett, SN4 7AU.
