Pam Flowerdew

There were many warm tributes and a Royal British Legion Guard of Honour at the funeral of Pamela Anne Flowerdew, 79, at St Bartholomew's Church, Royal Wootton Bassett, on March 10.

Speakers included Pam's godson Steven Slade, her daughter-in-law Anne Flowerdew and sister Janet Mayne.

Pam was a kind, loving, friendly person, noted for her bubbly personality, warmth and easy rapport that endeared her to everyone she met; she loved to chat. She took pleasure in her appearance and her home and was a keen animal lover.

The Rev Michael Jones said: "Pamela was one of those generous people who devoted herself to the welfare of others. Not surprisingly, she made friends everywhere she went."

Pam, one of three sisters, was born at Thames Ditton and was a pupil at the Convent of the Nativity in Maidenhead.

On leaving school she studied at the Pitman College and gained excellent secretarial qualifications. Her subsequent career involved some interesting jobs, at the office of the Red Cross Canada Hospital at Taplow, for Thames Valley Police and Newbury College, where she was secretary to the Head of General Studies.

This was the post in which she and Phil Flowerdew first met, and although their courtship did not begin until two years later, after meeting again at a singles club, they found happiness together and were married for 29 years.

Pam was involved in the Royal British Legion, and was assistant secretary to the Grenadier Guards Association. In Royal Wootton Bassett, she gave valuable service as a volunteer on the town's CCTV monitoring team, Citizen's Advice, the Probation Service, and Victim Support. She also helped with administration for Swindon College Adult Learning.

The couple were fortunate in their wide circle of friends, locally and further afield, including some whom they met while boating or caravanning. Pam will be sorely missed by family members, friends and neighbours.

Entry music in church was A Different Corner, by George Michael, and the service ended with Sacrifice, by Elton John. Hymns were Morning has broken, I Vow to Thee, My Country and Jerusalem.

Interment took place at Royal Wootton Bassett Cemetery prior to refreshments at the Conservative Club. Memorial donations to The Blue Cross, an animal charity, may be sent c/o Maslin Funeral Service 118a High Street, Royal Wotton Bassett, SN4 7AU.
