Leading experts from the world of gardening will head for Malmesbury next year for what is set to become one of the most prestigious events of its kind in the country.
The first ever Gardens Illustrated Festival, which will take place at a number of venues in Malmesbury, will celebrate “all things horticultural”.
Enthusiasts from miles around are expected to converge on the historic North Wiltshire town on Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18.
Last night business leaders said they were delighted that the “gardener’s bible” had chosen Malmesbury to host the event.
The announcement follows hot on the heels of the celebrated BBC History Weekend, which has drawn thousands of people to Malmesbury over the past two years.
Gardens Illustrated, which is published monthly, is internationally recognised as the definitive guide to stylish gardens.
Like the four-day history event, the Gardens Illustrated Festival will bring leading experts to the town, including appearances by ‘gardening VIPs’ Dan Pearson, Alys Fowler, Sarah Raven and others.
The organisers say the festival will feature a “fascinating programme of talks, garden tours and photography, and garden art workshops”.
There will also be the opportunity to buy from a “carefully selected gathering of the country’s finest nurseries and suppliers of beautiful garden products”.
Publisher of Gardens Illustrated Marie Davies said: “Widely recognised as the world’s most influential and inspiring garden title, Gardens Illustrated prides itself on featuring the very best gardens, plants and products.
“This festival will see the pages of the magazine brought to life as Gardens Illustrated takes over Malmesbury’s Abbey, Town Hall and sacred Cloister Gardens for a celebration of all things horticultural.”
Yesterday the chairman of the Malmesbury and District Chamber of Commerce, Aimee Frankham, said: “This is fantastic news – absolutely wonderful.
“It looks like Malmesbury is becoming the place for these sorts of events.”
