Youngsters at a Devizes infants school will be getting in the spirit of the Tour of Britain tomorrow when they bling up their bikes and spruce up their scooters.
More than 100 of world’s top cyclists, including Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, will be riding through Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Seend, Devizes, Pewsey, Rushall and Easton Royal.
Wiltshire Council has called on communities to make it a day to remember and is hosting a FanZone at County Hall in Trowbridge featuring jugglers, stilt walkers and a Wealth of Wiltshire market with cycling stalls.
Hundreds of schoolchildren waving flags will line the route while Wiltshire Council will be promoting the county’s cycling routes and encouraging people to sign up for a cycling challenge of their own.
The council has also decorated the route with gold painted recycled bicycles featuring messages of support as the county gets behind an event that attracts a global audience.
Leader Jane Scott said: “Communities across Wiltshire have shown their support for the Friends Life Tour of Britain.
“Wiltshire Council’s FanZone will have something for everyone to enjoy and our towns and villages have organised events to celebrate the county hosting one of the major cycling events in the world. We are looking forward to showing off the best of Wiltshire.”
Caroline Jackson, headteacher of Southbroom Infants, said: “We are all very excited about the tour coming through Devizes.
“We will all be out there with banners and flags to see them go by. We are really embracing it. Cycling is a healthy lifestyle and it is good to encourage children to ride their bikes.”
Scooter riding is also popular at the school which has a special rack so children can ride them to school in the morning and store them safely.
Pupils will be decorating their bikes and scooters during the school day tomorrow.
Villagers in Seend are expected to be out in force ready for the riders to go through at about 11.14am.
A lunchtime barbecue will be held in the village social club.
At Seend School pupils will be heading out to watch from Lye Field. They will be shown maps of Wiltshire and the cyclists’ route going through the village.
Headteacher Jackie Chalk said: “We will go there and cheer and make a lot of noise.”
Other Devizes schools and nurseries will also be taking to the streets to cheer on the riders. Heathcote House nursery, St Joseph’s nursery, Tailor Made Childcare, Devizes School, Wansdyke Primary, St James Academy, Nursteed School and Downlands School will be at the roadside as the cyclists come through town from about 11.23am.
Former World Champion Mark Cavendish may feature in the race for the line in the sprint section of the contest in Bath Road.
A Wiltshire Council spokesman could not confirm the exact location of the sprint finish as they had not yet been advised by the organisers. The riders may get a glimpse of the Wadworth shire horses as they speed down New Park Street.
Then the route then takes them down Nursteed Road and out towards Pewsey.
Some people have been confused about the route as gold bikes are positioned in London Road and the Market Place but deputy Devizes town clerk Simon Fisher said they were there to promote the race generally at strategic points rather than denoting the actual route.
