Cycling stars Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish will follow in the cycle tracks of Kitty King when they ride through Pewsey – more than 100 years after started the first carnival on her bike.
Pewsey Carnival was inspired by a bicycle procession in France watched by one the Goddard brothers, who owned a cycle shop in the village.
And in a fitting tribute the Tour of Britain arrives in village during Pewsey Carnival fortnight.
On the eve of the race villagers, led by artist Sue Faux, will decorate the route as part of the Have a Go scheme.
Dawn Wilson, who chairs Pewsey Community Area Partnership, said: “When I heard the Tour of Britain was passing through Pewsey during carnival I realised this was a unique opportunity to do something colourful that could bring the community together as part of this project as well as promoting Pewsey Vale itself and adding more colour for the Carnival.
“After talking to Wiltshire’s Highways about pavement painting on the road itself to celebrate the carnival and the Tour of Britain I am delighted that it is being offered as part of the Have a Go menu of activities.”
Pewsey’s U3A photography club is planning to photograph the tour as it passes through the village.
Coun Jerry Kunkler, a Wiltshire Council portfolio holder for leisure and sport, said: “The Tour of Britain is delivering the perfect opportunity to highlight Pewsey and to promote the excellent work going on in the community.
“What better incentive than to have the road art featured on national television.”
Nick Gordon, owner of new bike shop Pewsey Velo, is looking forward to getting a glimps of Bradley Wiggins who inspired him to return to the UK after opening up bike shops in Australia.
He said:“It’s a lucky coincidence that the shop opened as the Tour of Britain is coming through.
“My wife is a Wiltshire girl and we were feeling a bit homesick and when Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France that’s when I decided to come back.
“For someone who follows the sport to have a British winner is amazing.
"I’ll give him a wave as he comes past because he gave my life a change of direction.
“We’ve got a big screen here so we’re inviting customers to spend the day with us, once they’ve seen the race come through Pewsey they can watch the rest in the shop.”
