I see that Councillor Hutton recently stated that all comments and suggestions regarding the skatepark would be welcomed.
We have heard this before at the previous meetings. We were allowed to speak once only. We were not given any answers to our questions and were told the comments would be noted. No discussion took place because we were not given any replies to our concerns.
More than 1,100 petitioners signed to object to Monkton Park being used for the skatepark. These were mainly from the Monkton Park and St Mary’s Street area. The others were people who used the park regularly, or valued it for being a peaceful and beautiful area in a busy town. This petition has been ignored.
The whole truth is that some of our council, particularly those with the most power, have decided that, whatever the cost, Monkton Park is where the skatepark is going, regardless of any sensible objections.
We understand the cost of this site will be far more expensive, possibly double, the cost of placing it elsewhere. As for the Bridge Centre fiasco providing some of the cash for the skatepark, although this money was for young people, only a very small proportion will benefit, ie skatepark users. Youth workers are being made redundant because of lack of cash.
Will councillors, who should be able to see this is not logical, have a rethink and accept that this is the wrong decision? Spend the money wisely so that all can benefit. Perhaps a less expensive skatepark at a another location would allow spare cash for other youth projects.
Richard Taylor, Chippenham.
