THE story of the town’s Market Cross will be re-enacted to mark its 200th anniversary.
A direct descendant of Henry Addington or Viscount Sidmouth, donor of the monument in Devizes Market Place, is involved in the free celebration event which takes place on Tuesday August 26 at 5.30pm.
It is being run as part of Devizes Carnival fortnight and the Natural Theatre Company, based in Bath, will be performing a light hearted re-enactment accompanied by the present Viscount Sidmouth Jeremy Sidmouth, 67, who lives near Calne.
A panel on the cross tells the story of Ruth Pierce, of Potterne, who dropped dead in the Market Place in 1753.
