A couple who for many years managed the fruit farm in Devizes have celebrated the sweet taste of 60 years of marriage.
Gwen and Bob Squire of Bricksteed Avenue, Devizes, met when they were both growing up in rural villages in Devon.
They started going out just before Mr Squire joined the Royal Navy and were married when Mrs Squire was 19.
They moved to Devizes in 1968 when they became managers of the fruit farm in Drews Pond Lane and lived in a bungalow on the site until the land was sold for housing in the 1980s and they were made redundant.
Mrs Squire, 79, found new work at Townsends Nursery, Devizes, where she stayed for 17 years and her husband, 84, worked for Cross Engineering.
The couple share a love of gardening and have been successful many times in the Devizes In Bloom competition.
Mrs Squire said: “It is something we both enjoy and we are proud of our garden. It is Bob’s main hobby but I also enjoy knitting and I make a lot of things for the charity shoeboxes at Christmas and for my great grandchildren.”
The couple have two sons, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The couple celebrated the day of their diamond wedding anniversary with a lunch together at the new Moonrakers restaurant and then a family meal on Saturday night.
Mrs Squire said: “We told everyone we didn’t want a fuss.”
