Novice designer Megan Wright, of Devizes, is one of the five university students who has created the new uniform for Girlguiding.
Miss Wright, 22, and her colleagues were studying fashion at the Arts University, Bournemouth, when they successfully pitched to be chosen as the designers of the new uniform.
After a year of consulting with Guides, the new range launched this week.
The team has created a range of clothing for girls aged ten to 14, including tops to wear with trousers, leggings, skirts, jeans and shorts, as well as a uniform and skirt. The main colour is royal blue, with a red collar and sleeves, replacing the previous navy with a striped top.
Miss Wright, of Nursteed Road, said it was a prestigious project to be involved in.
“The experience and opportunity of being able to design for such a high profile charity is incredible. We have been so lucky. I really love the new dress and skirt, which were not parts of the uniform before.”
Guides focus groups revealed what they did and did not like and the girls had strong opinions, resulting in a number of re-designs. They told the designers they wanted choice and clothes that were comfortable and not too ‘boyish’.
Miss Wright, a former pupil of Devizes School and Trowbridge College, said: “It was such an amazing experience and it teaches you exactly what you need to know in the fashion industry. The colours of the new uniform are very bright and bold and all of the Guides who tried on the clothes loved it.”
Miss Wright graduated in June and hopes to secure a job in fashion in Bath. Her grandmother, Shirley Manning of Pewsey, is a wedding dress maker.
Chief Guide Gill Slocombe said: “We are thrilled with the designs. They’re fresh, young and versatile.”
