Hillworth Park has been rated as one of the best in the UK with the award of a Green Flag.
The accolade, awarded by Keep Britain Tidy, is given to parks and open spaces that boast the highest possible standards. It is the equivalent of a Blue Flag for beaches and recognises that the park is well maintained and has excellent facilities. .
Hillworth Park is owned and run by Devizes Town Council and underwent a £1.8 million refurbishment two years ago.
Devizes Mayor Sarah Bridewell said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the first time from Keep Britain Tidy. This award recognises and highlights that people in Devizes are benefiting from a green space of the very highest quality.”
Green Flag Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply to renew each year.
Simon Fisher, deputy town clerk of Devizes, said: “There are stringent criteria to gain the award. This covers how the park is managed with its maintenance, how green and sustainable the park is in terms of composting and recycling materials. Also, how well the park is used, how we promote the use in the park and how it’s embedded in the community.
“With a Green Flag Award you know you are going to a nice park where there are things to do, it is well managed and safe.”
Hillworth Park is one of 1,476 locations that have been awarded a Green Flag this year.
Green Flag scheme manager Paul Todd said: “The award is national recognition for parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.
“Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
