Donald Heath, 85, of Calne, was a kind, gentle family man who was a role model for the younger generation, tributes recalled at his funeral, attended by large congregation at St Laurence Church, Hilmarton.
Mr Heath, the second of Fred and Nellie Heath’s four sons, was born in 1929 at Goatacre and went to school in Hilmarton and Calne. On leaving school at 14, he worked on a relative's farm in the village, and was a keen sportsman. He played football for Dauntsey and cricket for Goatacre.
Mr Heath was 21 when he met Joan. Their first date was at Bristol speedway, and they also enjoyed going to football matches.
They were married in 1953 and enjoyed 61 years together.
Their son Colin was born in 1955 and now there are two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
In retirement, caravanning was enjoyed and Mr and Mrs Heath had a motorhome in in which they liked to explore the British countryside. Mr Heath worked for some years at RAF Lyneham and was a member of the Civil Service Motoring Association. He also took great pleasure in his garden.
He made many lasting friendships and all who knew him have wonderful memories to treasure. “He was so very special,” said the Rev Jim Scott, who officiated at the service. After the interment in the churchyard, everyone was welcomed to share more reminiscences and refreshments in the church hall. Memorial donations were for St Laurence's Church, Hilmarton.
