Dulcie Margaret Owen (nee Hadley)
OWEN Dulcie Margaret (nee Hadley) Teacher, mother, nana and great-nana Dulcie Owen died peacefully at home in Cherhill, Calne on 31st May 2023. She was born in Wales and attended Brynmawr County School before spending three years during the war in Cardiff at the University's Home Economics College. Teaching posts in Derbyshire followed. In 1949 she married Theo, a teacher and later solicitor, and they set up their home in Cherhill, near Calne. On moving to Wiltshire, Mrs Owen continued to teach Home Economics, at Fynamore and John Bentley Schools and was Head of Department until retiring in 1983. After she retired, she helped her husband with the law practice he had set up at Brook House in Cherhill. Mrs Owen was a good organiser, an accomplished educator, a wonderful and generous cook, a great story-teller, a keen gardener and yet still found time to keep in touch with the many friends she had made in her long life. A loving, warm, and fun-loving mother, nana, great-nana and friend of many in the village, she was a passionate advocate for the WI and other village organisations. Recently, she had celebrated her 100th Birthday with close friends. After a private cremation, a Service of Thanksgiving was held in a packed St James' Church in Cherhill on 10th July, when Mrs Owen's daughter Mair and son-in-law Colin were joined by her grandchildren and great grandchild and many friends from the village. Her ashes were returned, together with her husbands', to a family grave near Brecon in Wales on 11th August.
