Whilst this little gem of a festival is as professional as it needs to be there’s a refreshing non-elitist element that keeps its feet firmly on the ground. And when half the “staff” are there as performers it really does make the point that much of it is for and by the town.

This time it was the turn of double bass player Michael Cainen who works in the marketing department at the Pound, the festival’s permanent home. His concert in St Bartholomew’s Church showed the range and colour of the double bass and his mastery – and love – of it.

From the melancholy of Gliere’s Intermezzo, through the lyricism of Bottesini, Cainen’s personal charm shone through a fascinating programme. His playing underlined how much the instrument is underrated.

He concluded with a “novelty” piece by Tom Johnson, Failing, with words as well as music from the performer, which, in the depths of a church was at times difficult to follow. Which makes the point that instrumentalist performers need to project their announcements and words as clearly as their music.
