Jon Cannon, St Mary’s and St John’s
JON Cannon took 30 festival supporters time travelling on Sunday, taking them between the 12th and 15th centuries via the architecture and inscriptions of two of Devizes’ great churches, St Mary’s and St John’s. Sweeping through the centuries, modern-day analogies overlaid history, such as being told that a current equivalent of the murder of Thomas A Beckett would be the Queen ordering the death of Gordon Brown. After an illustrated talk in St Mary’s, the group adjourned to St John’s, marvelling at the architectural developments, such as the invention of rib vaulting for ceilings.
