The Heath Quartet, Town Hall
Devizes Festival was privileged to welcome the Heath String Quartet to give the first of its classical music concerts for the 2009 programme, continuing the policy of encouraging talented young musicians from around the country.
The Quartet, originally formed at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, has already had success in major competitions in the Netherlands and in Vienna.
The ambitious programme of Haydn, Janacek and Mendelssohn fully demonstrated not only their individual skills as performers but also the ability to perform as a coherent group, constantly aware of what other members of the group were doing.
Whether it was in the grace and delicacy of Haydn’s delightful Frog Quartet or the depths of passion of Janacek’s Kreutzer Sonata Quartet we were constantly reminded of this interaction with each other.
The concert ended with a magnificent performance of Mendelssohn’s F minor Quartet, written not long after the death of his beloved sister, Fanny.
