A “quintessentially English” pub near a tourist hotspot has been handed a new food hygiene rating in the latest inspections.

The Rising Sun at Bowden Hill, within walking distance of the National Trust managed village of Lacock, was one of several venues visited by inspectors in the last month.

The pub scooped an impressive four-out-of-five rating, meaning standards at the venue are “good”.

Food safety officers have been monitoring the food hygiene standards of multiple venues around the county during unannounced visits.

These regular checks see businesses marked on how hygienic their handling of food is, the management of food safety, and the cleanliness and condition of their facilities.

Like The Rising Sun, most venues inspected across the last month performed well.

However Lyneham takeaway Spice of Asia was warned to make “major improvements” after picking up a one-out-of-five grade.

408 of the county’s 568 registered restaurants, cafes and canteens boasted ratings of five-out-of-five at the time of writing, equivalent to 72 per cent of these venues.
