PUPILS from Trinity School have joined in the protest against Tesco in Devizes closing by writing letters to the company.
The 28 children in Jane Williams’ year four Sycamore class have each written a letter to Tesco this week to protest.
The closure hits close to home as several pupils have family members who work in the failing store including eight-year-old Kahlen Robinson.
Miss Williams said: “The children are very passionate about the subject and proud of their letters.
“Like me all the children are local and have shopped in Tesco with their parents.
“The children were working on persuasive writing in class as part of the curriculum so I thought a real life example would be a good experience for them.”
The youngsters, from the school on Quakers Road, each constructed a letter in which they had to persuade Tesco not to close.
Reasons like many others in the town included the loss of clothing for children.
Once all the letters have been finalised and written out, a member Kahlen’s family will be sending copies to the stores management team along with the Tesco head office.
The letters now join the growing list of Devizes people who are unhappy that the store, on Maryport Street, is due to close on April 4 as Tesco say it is not making enough money.
In a previous statement regarding the closure a Tesco spokesman said: “It was a very difficult decision to take but, because it’s unprofitable, we’ve decided to close our Devizes store. We have had to make some very tough choices to protect the future of our UK business.
“We are very grateful for the support we’ve received from the community and will strive to deliver an excellent service to customers through our nearby stores and online service.”
