Delicate and tactile wooden sculptures created using power tools will be on display at Lacock Abbey from October 26 to November 17.

‘Strat’, the unusual artworks by Frome-based artist Anthony Rogers, are inspired by the natural world and can be enjoyed in the garden and medieval cloisters of the National Trust abbey.

The shapes of Mr Rogers’ sculptures are reminiscent of the medieval arches in the nearby cloisters and art lovers of all ages can get up close, as visitors are encouraged to feel the sculptures. Sculpted seats will also form part of the exhibition, providing views across the surrounding Wiltshire landscape.

Rachael Holtom, visitor experience officer, said: "I took my young son to see Anthony’s work when I first discovered it and he loved them, especially the fact that they are made using a chainsaw.

"Considering the powerful force behind such a tool, it struck me how delicate and detailed the sculptures are. They are so unusual and I think they’ll appeal to a wide audience."

Strata is the third exhibition of its kind at the National Trust property, which has had great success with the recent exhibition of Derek Kinzett’s Inner Spirit Collection in 2012 and 2013.

Rachael added: "Hosting outdoor sculpture exhibitions at Lacock has been a great addition to our programme, especially in autumn and spring, when the garden is in a constant state of change and full of colours."

Artist Anthony Rogers lives in Frome and works predominantly with wood, making use of locally felled trees and reused timber, often railway sleepers. The pieces are carved and shaped using both hand and power tools.

Of ‘Strata’ he said: "This is a great opportunity to present a body of work in such a beautiful setting, allowing me to respond to the surroundings in a way which I hope will resonate with visitors."

The exhibition runs from Saturday October 26 to Sunday November 17. The grounds will be open from 10.30am to 5.30pm every day until November 3, and from 11am to 4pm from November 4 onwards, also daily. Normal admission applies. National Trust members and children under five go free.
