Schoolboy Ollie Brake has raised more than £1,400 to keep his favourite plane flying – by selling his toys at the weekend.
The seven-year-old from Lockside, Pewsham, fell in love with the iconic Vulcan bomber two years ago and decided he wanted to help Vulcan to the Skies, the charity that is raising money to save the last flying Vulcan.
His initiative has even inspired the charity to adopt a new Toy Aid campaign, for other like-minded fanatics to help fundraise.
His dad Paul, 39, said: “Ollie has been a little trooper; he’s a bit tired now but he was well up for the task. He has been absolutely amazing; he thought of the idea and has carried it through.
“He loves the Vulcan; I think it is the size of it and the noise of it. He’s fascinated with it.”
The Derry Hill schoolboy, who wants to join the RAF when he is older, has been obsessed with aeroplanes since he first went to the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford two years ago.
He has been to air shows in recent months, including Kemble, Yeovilton and again at this year’s air tattoo in Fairford.
In total, Ollie and his family raised £727 at the toy and book sale over the weekend, with Specsavers in Chippenham, where Ollie’s mum Sara works, pledging to double the amount raised to bring the total up to £1,400.
His grandmother Avril Davis, who let Ollie hold the two-day toy sale at her home in Derry Hill, said Ollie’s late grandfather Roger, an RAF navigator on the Hercules, would have been very proud.
“It’s absolutely incredible to have raised £700. People have been so kind and so generous,” she said.
“Ollie is chuffed to bits.
“He’s such a clever little boy. He will probably be an entrepreneur when he gets older. His grandfather would have been so proud.
“He got an envelope with a £10 cheque and a note which said ‘to a special little boy who likes his aeroplanes: £10 towards his Vulcan’. We would like to thank that person, whoever it was.”
Richard Clarke, a spokesman for The Vulcan to the Sky Trust, said: “It’s so nice to see a young person show such initiative.
“We will hopefully be able to give him some kind of experience with the Vulcan that will reward him for his efforts. It’s a super initiative and hopefully something we could extend; he has set the ball rolling and it’s a credit to him.”
