A FIRE spread through the workshop of a car dealership on a Wiltshire town's high street in the early hours of this morning.
A member of the public dialled 999 after seeing smoke coming from the roof of the Hyams Autos in Malmesbury at around 2.57am.
UPDATE: Staff left devastated by blaze
The fire service then received more emergency calls from concerned witnesses who could see flames inside the building, which is surrounded by homes and businesses.
Firefighters from Chippenham, central Swindon, Corsham, Tetbury, and Cirencester's fire stations were called in to tackle the blaze.
The property had residential flats on the floor above, so firefighters acted quickly to check if anyone was inside the burning building.
A spokesman for the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Upon arrival, it was unknown if there were any persons in the flat above, so firefighters forced entry and used rapid deployment, putting themselves directly into the risk area to make an immediate start on tackling the fire.
"Fifteen breathing apparatus wearers, two hose reel jets, a covering jet, small gear and thermal imaging cameras were used to extinguish the blaze, which also saw multiple vehicles damaged.
"Crews continued working throughout the morning to ensure the safety of the scene."
One local posted on social media: "Shout out to the wonderfully friendly and altruistic couple at Jackdaws cafe who have made free teas and coffees for all the fireman, policeman and Hyams workers at the scene of the fire this morning. So generous. Sending thoughts to Paul and his team."
The High Street was still closed off by firefighters until around 6am.
Staff at Jackdaws Cafe further along the busy main road made free tea and coffee for the emergency service workers and Hyams staff at the scene.
