DORSET & Wilts' hopes of a return to Twickenham were ended as Surrey gained revenge for their final defeat at the hands of the Twin Counties two years ago.

The home side's youngsters never really got to terms with their Surrey counterparts even when the visitors were down to 14 players for 10 minutes midway through the second half when full-back Fraser Mosley received a yellow card for a professional foul.

Surrey took an early lead with a try from number eight Ian White converted by fly-half Neil Hallett.

Twenty minutes had elapsed when centre Matt Noble crossed beneath the home posts to touch down for a try with Hallett converting.

Half time beckoned and the Twin Counties mounted their first serious challenge and following a scrum close to the visitors' line Chippenham number eight Bobby Lyons set up left wing Tim Berry for a try.

A late Hallett penalty saw Surrey 17-5 ahead at the break.

After the interval the Twin Counties had a chance to pull three points back, but the penalty was missed and Surrey blasted downfield for wing Fraser Carlisle to score a try beneath the posts that skipper Hallett converted.

Eight minutes into the second half and Salisbury full-back Tom Pottage latched on a kick and chase to ground the ball for a try which he converted.

However, from here on in it was all the Hallett show, as he charged down an attempted clearance kick to follow up and touch down.

Then at the death he gathered up a stray pass and ran in beneath the home posts, he converted both tries to seal a worthy victory for his team.

Twin Counties manager Julie Swann said: “No complaints from me they were the better side, all but two of their squad play for level five clubs London Irish Wild Geese and Dorking whereas most of our lads play in lower divisions.

"But saying that, we didn’t let ourselves down, we conceeded two late tries when we were chasing the game which gives the impression that the game was more one sided than it was, but if we can keep this squad of youngsters together they should come good in a year or two.''
