THE new landlords of a pub are promising to revitalise and transform it into a warm and welcoming, family-friendly establishment serving locally-produced food.

The King's Arms in Marsh Road, Hilperton, had a bit of a bad reputation, according to the new landlord and chef Keith Morris.

But the 46-year-old and his wife Sue, 47, are turning things around.

He said: "Since we arrived we've been getting rid of the troublemakers and we've got plans for the future.

"This pub had a bit of an image problem but things are changing."

The couple are planning a complete refurbishment of the premises including both the exterior and interior.

Mr Morris said: "We're finalising the plans for the makeover which will include a number of changes. We're getting rid of one of the porches that is never used. The outside of the pub will be painted, smartened up and made more welcoming and we'll have brand new signs.

"We've got plans inside too. A pillar splits the bar so we're going to use that natural divide to create a drinking area for those popping in for a pint and a restaurant area where people can sample our new menu.

"I'm a chef by trade and I'm planning to introduce more home-cooked local food, all in the traditional pub style. Our Sunday roast will still be £5.95 though, as that is one of the favourites."

Mr Morris and his wife have been running pubs for about eight years. Although they are now tied to a brewery, they are introducing a range of bottled beers for those who want to sample other drinks.

He said: "We're bringing in the new European lagers like Mythos from Greece and Sagres from Portugal as well as a Russian beer called Baltika and Bulmers' new pear cider."

Mr Morris is also toying with the idea of running a small car boot sale in the pub's large car park.

The couple are hoping the pub will now appeal to families and local people who perhaps might have been put off from visiting in the past.

He said: "We've got a good clientele now. We don't tolerate any trouble so the atmosphere is returning to a more friendly and welcoming one."
